For those looking for an organization that empowers women, Malikah may be a great option.
Malikah builds power and safety within communities as an anti-violence training and mutual aid organization. They achieve this through comprehensive programs in self-defense, financial literacy, organizing, and healing.
My connection with Malikah began when Isearched for Islamic communities where I could volunteer. Like many born into Islam who move to the West, I found myself drifting from my faith, assimilating into the dominant culture. Alhamdulillah, my journey back to Islam led me to seek out Muslim communities. I started volunteering with ICNYU, and their “Sisters” group chat introduced me to various other organizations. It was through one of these many chats that I learned about a Malikah event and decided to check it out.
Malkiah host a tonof cool events weather it be Self defence class, Sewing course, Crochet course, Egyptian cook class and just fun events where you can come meet some of the people that works for Mlikah and volunteers for her.
Malikah was founded in 2010 by Rana Abdelhamid. She initially began the organization by offering self-defense classes to women in her community, motivated by a hate-based attack she experienced as a teenager.
Having been to several of Malikah’s events, including their recent annual Eid Picnic at Astoria Park, I’ve had wonderful experiences. I’ve attached photos from some of the gatherings, which have also been great opportunities to make incredible friends
Here some fun things to note that Malikah also provides:
- They give out hot meals at certain days and time of the week
- They host many self defence classes where a licince perforsaional walks you through some tips and tricks on how to defend yourself.
- Has Free health screen sessions
