Barzakh: Where Brooklyn Meets the World
More than just a North African-inspired coffee shop and bookstore, Barzakh is an oasis—a true cultural melting pot where the air is thick with the scent of Moroccan mint tea and the rhythm of global instruments. Named after the Muslim concept of an “in-between place,” the café fully lives up to its name, seamlessly blending community warmth with a high-caliber arts venue. And when the crowd swells, the magic goes Beyond Barzakh.
The larger events—known as Beyond Barzakh—take this cultural mission city-wide. Imagine a space where musicians in vibrant attire share the stage, blending Sufi Qawwali with Middle Eastern folk, and traditional drums with modern flutes. It’s a dynamic, inclusive party—a community hub for people of all backgrounds to dance freely, express themselves, and share a universal love for music and culture.
Whether you’re sipping Yemeni coffee at the local café or catching a world-class cultural event hosted by Beyond Barzakh, you’re not just attending an event—you’re finding a home where diverse cultures meet, connect, and vibe. This is the in-between space Brooklyn needed.
My Experience
To be honest, I’d never attended one of these events before. But a new friend from Habibi Tech persuaded me, and I’m so glad they did! I discovered a truly unique space—a place where people from different cultural backgrounds who love music and instruments can come together. It’s a supportive community where folks are encouraged to express themselves, dance freely, and just vibe with others who share similar interests.
For the past two weekends, I’ve had the chance to check out both the local spot, Barzakh Café (down in Brooklyn near the Utica stop), and the larger Beyond Barzakh event in the city, which featured various performers. It was incredible to see musical instruments from different countries—drums, flutes, and more—and to watch band members show up in their vibrant cultural attire.
