This is a youth-led non-profit organization that provides a safe space and fosters healing for Sudanese youth in NYC impacted by the April 2023 civil war. Through events, seminars, and talks, they aim to help young people realize their power, ignite change, and find a sense of belonging and peace amidst their losses.
I attended one of their events, on May 23rd, 2025 called SUDAN IN STANZAS.
It was to honor the people of Sudan who have been though a lot. Since April 15, 2023, Sudan has been in a terrible civil war. This fight is between the Sudanese army (SAF), led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and a powerful group called the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti).
This war started because these two groups couldn’t agree on who should have power after a coup in 2021. Now, the United Nations and aid groups say it’s causing the biggest and fastest growing crisis in the world. Many people are being forced to leave their homes, and there’s a serious lack of food.
In short, Sudan is suffering from a brutal war that’s causing immense violence, forcing millions to flee, and leading to a rapidly worsening famine. Things are made even worse because other countries are getting involved, and there hasn’t been enough help from the international community.
As a poetry lover, I truly enjoyed the event. Even though I couldn’t stay for the entire program, I saw that they had a variety of performances, including music and singing. There were also small businesses selling items like jewelry and artwork, which was a great way to support them.
Awlad Alneel hosts many events open to the Muslim community. Even if you’re not Sudanese, you’re welcome to attend and support their small businesses or simply enjoy the offerings. It’s a fantastic way to connect with fellow Muslims.
